2022 Class Notes

1980s

Peter Brown ’80, architect, planner, development consultant, author, and instructor at the University of Minnesota, recently shared on LinkedIn, “I was deeply honored to have the opportunity to speak at the Lithuanian Real Estate Development Association conference today, and to talk a little bit about my book, How Real Estate Developers Think. I hope to have shared some useful and universal truths about the role of collaboration in successful development.”

Here is a glimpse of what the book is about:

“Cities are always changing: streets, infrastructure, public spaces, and buildings are constantly being built, improved, demolished, and replaced. But even when a new project is designed to improve a community, neighborhood residents often find themselves at odds with the real estate developer who proposes it. Savvy developers are willing to work with residents to allay their concerns and gain public support, but at the same time, a real estate development is a business venture financed by private investors who take significant risks.”

How Real Estate Developers Think is available on Amazon.

Members of the Class of ’82, Marcia Moran Lawless, Talethea Best, and Vicky Rodwin Ferentz got together this summer.

Regina Boykins ’83 and the Alameda Fires

In 2020, Alameda, OR, suffered a fire that destroyed over two thousand residential structures. Miraculously, the home of Regina Boykins ’83 was one of the only homes still standing.

From Ashlandtidings.com:

“Regina Boykins doesn’t have a GoFundMe account, but when you remember the Alameda fire and all the stories that have been told since, I’m hoping you’ll remember hers, too.

“Her own escape began at 11:28 a.m. the day of the fire, Sept. 8, when she received a Nixle alert from the city of Ashland warning her that flames were en route and that she was under a Level 3 ‘go’ evacuation order. And her tale ended in about the same spot six days later: https://www.mailtribune.com/news/top-stories/regina-boykins-surprising-return-home/?fbclid=IwAR0Lat0EMXbeCjCCwhr4sri3fVwv8GWiwINwrE7wcHaz-uhGyhErOkuyRzo.”

(L-R) Rob Gulick ’83, Chris D’Amanda ’78, Mike Lasser (English, 1966 to ’98), Kitty Lindsay Hawks ’66, Doug Gilbert ’87, and Ron Richardson (Art, 1975 to ‘98) gathered at Kitty’s home for refreshments and conversation before going to a concert by musical legend Dennis Wilson.

From Ron Richardson: “Great fun to join together such a variety of friends to attend a memorable show.”

And later that same week, Joyce, Dick, and Doug Gilbert, Kitty and Ron, went to Kilbourn Hall for a packed-house program featuring Mike’s selection and description of songs in celebration of his 40-year radio show, “Fascinatin’ Rhythm.”

Mitchell Goldman ’87, director of Camp Chateaugay in the Adirondacks, talks about the opening of summer camps during the pandemic:

“Here is a picture of Eckart Baum, who was an exchange student at Harley and living with my family during his Grade 11 year (1985 to ’86), and Ian Watson ’88.

“Both families live in Bavaria and got together for dinner on Saturday night. They had a terrific time! While they were there, we video chatted with them. I guess you could say it was a three family get-together!”

Melanie Bael Childers ’89 stopped by school to see Harley’s display of banned books following a Facebook posting:

“Banned Book Week September 26–October 2: Our wonderful assistant librarians, seniors Margot Hilyard and Anya O’Brien, have been working hard to create an informative display of banned books that we can proudly say are part of our Harley Library collection. Please stop by to see what Margot and Anya have been up to!”
