Commons Speaker series event – “Political Engagement” with Charly Carter ’82, founder of Step Up Maryland

The Harley School is hosting their latest Commons Series event for the 2020 – 2021 school year, featuring a conversation on political engagement with Charly Carter ’82, founder and executive director of Step Up Maryland. As America concludes a presidential election cycle, and Monroe County looks towards a 2021 election for the County Legislature and town representatives, the discussion will touch on how important it is for community members to be politically engaged and ask thoughtful questions to prompt discussions with candidates on important issues and policies.

This event is free and open to the public via Zoom, with registration required. In hosting this event, The Harley School is continuing its commitment to ensuring that there are opportunities to connect with their students, school community and the Rochester area on topics that are thought-provoking and status quo challenging.

Charly Carter ‘82, has been an effective force for political change for nearly three decades, advocating for working families and people of color. As the founder of Step Up Maryland, Step Up Cascadia and Step Up to Lead, she has a wealth of experience in civic engagement, candidate development and movement building.

Previously, Charly was the founding Executive Director of Maryland Working Families and the Maryland Progressive Pipeline Project, which has recruited and trained more than 400 progressive activists for leadership and elected office. Over her career, she has trained more than 3,000 local, state and federal candidates for the DNC, Wellstone Action, Women’s Campaign Fund and Participation 2000.
