Boys’ Swimming and Diving

2020 HAC class D Swimming and Diving Champs

The 2019–20 HAC boys’ swimming and diving team set a goal at the beginning of the season to take back the Class D sectional block, and they did just that, outscoring defending champion Campbell-Savona 330-313 to become champions. The victory marked the HAC Wolves’ third sectional title in four years for boys’ swimming and diving. The boys’ team also won the Genesee Region League meet Championship for the seventh straight year. Sam Gilbert ’21 was crowned Class D 100 breaststroke champion at Sectionals with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in the championship race. First-Team All-Genesee Region All-Stars this season were: Ben Friedberg ’22, Sam Gilbert ’21, Andrea Bosa ’23, Ryan Chapados ’20, Kasi Natarajan ’20, and Elina Natarajan ’22.

Girls’ Swimming

HAC Girls 2020 Swimming and Diving Champs

The 2019–20 HAC girls’ swim team also set a goal at the beginning of the season to take back the GR/NO Intersectional title, and they did so in convincing fashion. The Lady Wolves came out on top for the fifth time in six years, defeating defending champion Roy-Hart 356.5 to 335. The HAC girls won Genesee Region League meet championship for the sixth straight year and were crowned GR Division II titlists for the 14th straight season. At the 2020 GR/NO Intersectional meet, Erin Szuromi ’21 led the way for the Lady Wolves, winning the 50- and 100-free and teaming up with Cleo Wadkins ’20, Kit Briggs ’21, and McKenna Shearing ’21 to capture both the 200-medley relay and 400-free relay titles.

First-Team All-Genesee Region All-Stars this season were: Kit Briggs ’21, Caroline McGraw ’22, Giana Milazzo ’22, Erin Szuromi ’21, Cleo Wadkins ’20, Liza Cotter ’20, and McKenna Shearing ’21.

Boys’ Bowling

John Gambill

The HAC boys’ varsity bowling team had a very competitive season, finishing 31-19, good for third place in the Finger Lakes West division. Led by seniors Jon Gambill ’20 and Harrison Davis ’20, the Wolves qualified for sectionals and placed sixth during the 2020 Class D tournament. Gambill earned the high-game award at the Class D championships with a tremendous 255 game. At the FLW singles/doubles tournament earlier in the season, Gambill and Max Doud ’23 took first place in the Division B singles tournament with a 508 series, and Gambill took second place in Division A singles. The two also teamed up for second place in the Division A doubles tournament. The Wolves graduate six seniors this year and will look to retool for another successful season next year.

Girls’ Bowling

Margot Hilyard and Jacqueline Henry representing HAC at the Girls Bowling sectionals

The Lady Wolves headed into the bowling season with just one varsity bowler returning from last season (Margot Hilyard ’22) and were able to gain some valuable experience during the year. Despite a sub .500 record (15.5-34.5) in the very competitive Finger Lakes West girls’ division, HAC began to develop a new group of varsity bowlers for years to come.

Hilyard and Jacqueline Henry ’22 both stepped up to lead the Lady Wolves this season and qualified individually for Class D sectionals.

Boys’ Basketball

Aiden Kuelling ’20

Year after year, the HAC boys basketball team faces some tough competition in the Finger Lakes West division, and this year was no different. Three FLW teams combined for 34 league wins, making the Wolves 5-9 league record look better than the numbers. HAC lost five league games by a combined 23 points and nearly defeated Red Jacket at home, the league champion at 14-0.

Down the stretch, the Wolves played near .500 ball and earned themselves a first round Class C 3 home Sectional game, defeating Keshequa handily (80-49). The 80 points were a high mark for the team and the following HAC hoopsters received All-Star and Finger Lakes league recognition:  Max-Yamil Cabezudo-Brown ’22 was chosen Second-Team All-Star, Owen Tindall ’21 was named Third-Team All-Star, and Noah Mendola ’21 was an Honorable Mention All-Star. Aiden Kuelling ’20 was selected to participate in the Finger Lakes Exceptional Senior All-Star game.

The Wolves will return all three Finger Lakes All-Stars next year and are preparing to improve on their FLW and sectional performances.

Girls’ Basketball

Amelia Gugino

The Lady Wolves entered the 2019–20 season with a young varsity roster, including eight underclasswomen, five of whom were sophomores. Their senior leadership would have to come from Amelia Gugino ’20, and she didn’t disappoint. Despite a difficult Finger Lakes West division schedule, Gugino and the Lady Wolves battled every night all the way up to the final buzzer of the season in York. The team won four games this season and dropped five others by seven points or less.

Gugino was recognized for her efforts with a selection as a Finger Lakes West Second-Team All-Star. She was joined on that team by Anna Thomas ’22, who will enter next year as a seasoned veteran for the Lady Wolves. Gugino was also selected to participate in the Finger Lakes Exceptional Senior All-Star basketball game.
