In recognition of his career as a physician, researcher, and businessman, John Mills ’57 was appointed an Officer in the Order of Australia in 2015 for distinguished service to medicine in the field of infectious diseases, particularly HIV and AIDS, to medical administration, and to the development of Australia’s biotechnology industry.
Following his graduation from Harvard Medical School, John held a professorship at the University of California, San Francisco. Recruited to Australia, from 1991 – 2002, he was managing director of the Burnet Institute for Medical Research in Melbourne. Heading several nonprofits and private companies, John has also authored more than 200 research publications. At present, he continues his clinical activities, research into respiratory viruses and HIV, and business ventures.
